Beasts steal one from Fury, red-hot Cho

Fastbreak NYC 2K10 SPR Game of the Week

MLK HS, NYC -- This wasn't a very pretty game to watch for 3 qtrs but by the end of the 4th, it had lived up to its billing. Neither team looked particularly sharp on offense through 3. Points were scrambled together through TOs or defensive miscues. Only NYF (G) Alex Cho looked believable on offense, which should be less and less of a surprise as the veteran guard has been hot all month and has shown no signs of slowing down. His 10 pts carried NYF in an uninspiring 19-19 1st half.

INSIDE THE STATS

HYP (G) Samuel Jenkins scored 22 pts, just two shy of his season-high 24 pts, despite shooting just 3-13 from the field.

Reigning MVP (G) Ian Yu has not reached the double-digit mark in scoring in each of his past 2 gms, scoring only a combined 12 pts while giving up 8 TOs and 10 fouls.

The Hypebeasts shot 43 FTs compared to the Fury's 19 FTAs. Both HYP's attempts and their 35 makes are FBNYC records.

Before last week's 22 pts, NYF (G) Alex Cho had not topped 20 in his BLUE league career. His 33 pts vs. HYP is a career-high.
In the 3rd, Cho dropped 8 more and NYF took control of the game as HYP mustered only 5 pts in the quarter. Even former All-FBNYC (C) George Chan, in his first game of the season, seemed tentative--but no more than (C) Howie Chu, who just looked uninterested. But, early in the 4th, NYF (C) Rich Chang was called for his 6th foul. He would have to sit and their sub would present some glaring mismatches.

HYP's leading scorer meanwhile, (G) Sam Jenkins had not yet made a FG. He started the 4th with a steal and FG, then knocked down a 3FG. Two FTs by Jenkins, two from Chan and a layup from (F) Mamadou Hanne and the Beasts were suddenly alive. Only Cho could answer, scoring 15 pts in the 4th but down the stretch, NYF (C) Bryant Picone, picked up a questionable 6th foul. Cho lost his composure and the Fury, up 5, gave up not only a FT to keep Picone in the game but another for Cho's outburst. After 4 FTs, HYP was within 1. Picone  fouled twice more, giving HYP three FTs each time while NYF went cold.

HYP soon built a 7-pt lead and looked to be in control with less than 1:00 left. But, here's where the game, as Alice would say it, got curiouser and curiouser. Cho makes an impossible 3FG with less than :30 secs left in the game. HYP inbounds and gets it past the Fury trap but (G) Ian Yu instead of laying it in, turns around to dribble out the clock. NYF (G) Jon Giacobbe then steals it, making a 3FG to get within one. Giacobbe then draws an offensive foul and the Fury have the ball with :14 secs and a chance to win. NYF's sub is then inexplicably fouled by Yu, his 6th and goes to line, makes 1 to put the game in OT.

HYP appeared to have to play with four but (G) Leon Chu, who had been in warm-ups resting a pulled hamstring, checked in. After HYP won the tip, Chu found brother Howie in the high post for two. They would be the only pts in OT. With time winding down, a turn-around 3FG by Cho at the buzzer went halfway down and out. It was a career day for Cho but bet that he would have traded in all 33 pts for that last 3 to go down. Hypebeasts, somehow, pull out the win. -
