Hypebeasts strong if not powerful in season opening win
MLK HS, NYC -- Last season's expansion team sensation, the Hypebeasts opened up the 2K10 season with a comfortable if not quite compelling win over another group of FBNYC newbies, the NY Crossbearers. In some ways, this was a bit of a grudge match as returning (G) Ian Yu, (G) Leon Chu and (C) Howie Chu faced off against former teammates (F) James Li and (G) Will Moy.

INSIDE THE STATS HYP (G) Ian Yu continues to believe he can get it done from 3-pt range, making 2-4 in his season debut for more than half his points.
CRB shot just 1-13 (.077) from long range but connected on over 50% from inside the arc with 17-31 FGs (.548).
HYP led by roughly 10 to 12 for the duration of the game and despite their superior size in the low-post--this without veteran (C) George Chan in the line-up--the Beasts rarely used it to their advantage. Chu and (F) Amin Gillespie brought on from last season's Swagganauts team along with former SWA captain (F) Dave Liu, saw few touches even seemed even more reluctant to work for position to get looks.
When they did finally get the ball around the basket, they were effective with Chu and Liu scoring 10 pts each in the game. But, again, it was Yu who dictated the tempo of the game, continually challenging the CRB defense into the paint and even converting on two 3FGs.
The NY Crossbearers, for their part, seemed to have 15 players during warm-ups. Ten logged minutes. CRB appears to be on the smaller and lighter side for a BLUE league team but they played reasonably well considering how much they appeared to be over-matched. They showed some balanced scoring as all but two players marked the scoring column for the Crossbearers. But, few made any significant moves on offense.
Stalwart (F) Mike Chan led the way on offense as his versatile floor game led to 13 pts, 7 rebs and 4 stls. (G) Will Moy, brought over from HYP also contributed solid points despite a rare goose egg from deep. Li, as usual, anchored the team on D. If CRB, is going to compete at this size, they're going to have to turn up the tempo and score. (G) Dave Zheng will have to contribute. -- "Scoop" Jack Sun
