MLK HS, NYC -- Money hasn't won since their Wk 1 rout of BTR, a game that made it seem like they wouldn't miss All-Star (F) Shanti Garcia, who's sitting out the season. But, even with the addition of the solid (F) Rommel Reece and more youth and speed in (G) J.J. Pablo, MNS has struggled. The team that was a perimeter shooting juggernaut last season just hasn't found the mark, finishing just 1-13 from deep in their game with DWL.
The Legends, on the other hand, have looked alternately good and bad. Week 6's match-up was an opportunity for DWL to prove they can win without (F) Nick Watson who was moved up to the BLUE league last week. Both teams had plenty to prove.
Money struck first, jumping out to an 11-5 lead and would be led throughout by the play of young stalwarts (F) Monty Tardio and (G) Lester Padilla. But, again their offense fell off and DWL took the lead. Only a questionable one-footer from deep at the buzzer from Tardio kept the teams tied 18-18 at the half.
Another 3FG at the 3rd qtr buzzer from Padilla gave MNS a 4-pt lead going into the 4th and more importantly, momentum. But DWL would answer as (G) Jeff Kim sank his second 3FG of the game and (G) John Keavney followed with a layup in transition. Suddenly, MNS shots again stopped falling. Keavney found (F) Ameer Lowe underneath the basket for two plus the FT and DWL regained the lead. Lowe would score again, then (F) Thomas Bello, Jr. to cap off the 12-2 run. MNS never recovered and with this 4th qtr burst, the Legends got not only their third win of the season but their first without Watson. -- Bill Wonton
