New additions help Legends hold off resilient Rimmers
MLK HS, NYC -- Right from the layup lines, you could tell this would be an exciting game as both teams featured high-flying highlight reel dunkers. The no. 1 ranked Gritty would have to face a tough Driveway Legends squad without their starting (C) Victor Chia but with (C) Ezra Hoover temporarily replacing him. Still, Chia's presence and chemistry would be missed.

INSIDE THE STATS DWL (C) Thomas Bello, Jr.'s 17 pts and 11 rebs marks a career-high in scoring and his 2nd double-double of the season. (F) Nick Watson has scored 20+ pts in two straight games this season.
NGC substitute (C) Ezra Hoover's 28 pts was 1-pt shy of the league season-high in scoring set by Watson last week.
Both teams came out firing, DWL (F) Nick Watson hit two deep 3FGs to start the game with 8 1st qtr pts but NGC (F) Kwon Lim would answer, attacking the hoop early on for 7 pts in the 1st. Hoover also scored at will in the paint in the 1st half on an array of dunks and acrobatic layups but DWL (F) Thomas Bello, Jr. continued his surprising offense this season with an impressive combination of drives and jumpers to keep DWL within striking distance. Double-teams on Watson led to open shots for DWL but a strong start by (F) Kenneth Van put Gritty up by 5 going into halftime.
In the 2nd half, both teams struggled to find a consistent flow but it was clear which team was hustling more, the Legends. They played a tough gusty defense, for Gritty TOs and quickly took the lead. Only a key 3FG down the stretch by (G) Jiwon Kim cut the Legends lead to 51-50 entering the 4th qtr. But it was clear that Gritty’s veteran team chemistry was not the same without Chia. In the 4th, DWL turned 3 more Gritty TOs into buckets late in the game despite having regained the lead.
In the end, it came down to the final play. Tied at 60-60, Hoover found (G) John Park open on the baseline for a 3FG but this time, the Messiah could not deliver. The Legends had the ball with :10 secs and a chance to give NGC their first loss of the season.
While all eyes were on Watson, he deferred to Bello who made a strong move in the paint to convert a difficult layup over Hoover plus the foul. For Gritty, TOs and a sudden lack of chemistry without their starting center couldn't be overcome. The Legends, for their part, looked like genuine contenders. -- FBNYC
