New additions help Legends hold off resilient Rimmers
MLK HS, NYC -- The Driveway Legends warned us that their best player was not available for their opening day loss to TX Thunder. But, who could have expected (F) Nick Watson to show up. In the layup lines, the man looked like the RED league's version of Dwight Howard. Until, that is, he started sinking 3FGs from 30-ft out. Watson was going to change the game and suddenly DWL looked a heck of a lot better.

INSIDE THE STATS DWL (F) Nick Watson's 29 pts is the most any player has scored so far this season. His 12 rebs makes him the 2nd DWL player to record a double-double in as many games.
BTR (C) James Walsh's 19 pts and 10 rebs is his first double-double of the season and the second of his career.
The Rimmers, whether they want to admit it or not, looked shaken by Watson's punishment of the rim in warm-ups. And, sure enough, BTR started flat, unable to score. Meanwhile, Watson took the game by storm, making two 3FGs and converting a layup plus FT. The attention he drew plus the open court play (G) Jeff Kim freed up their DWL teammates as (F) Thomas Bello, Jr. also hit a 3FG.
DWL had scored 12 pts before BTR was finally able to score. Quickly, the Rimmers fought back into the game and by no coincidence (G) Victor Alvarez had checked into the game. Alvarez' quickness and ball-handling gave BTR the creator they needed to set up (G) Eric Rhee and (G) Jimmy Chang while handling the DWL pressure. Displaying a deadly shot in his brief appearance last season, Alvarez was off. If he and BTR shooter (G) David Schwarz had made any of their 11 combined 3-pt misses, this game could have finished differently.
Through the 2nd half, Watson continued to find openings as (F) Lijo Kochupaul found him in transition on his way to a game-high 6 asts. Just as it seemed like DWL was poised to pull away, BTR (C) James Walsh simply took over. The Rimmers increased their intensity on D while the Legends started to miss and display some questionable decisions. Walsh scored 10 4th qtr pts and cagey play from veteran (F) Scott Linthorst brought BTR surging back late. Within 3 pts and less than a 1:00 remaining, DWL missed two FTs. But, Alvarez, who had been so sure with the ball all game lost it out of bounds in an unforced error. DWL regained possession and made enough FTs to put away a feisty and resilient BTR team. -- FBNYC
