MLK HS, NYC -- What didn't happen in this game? That's the better question, or at least the easier one to answer. In a match-up between the defending Champion Flipmode Ninjas--now re-dubbed the Alpha Kenny Ninjas--and a team some think is the team to beat this season, the run & gun Lilliputians, there was bound to be plenty of drama.

INSIDE THE STATS Five Lilliputian players reached double-figures in scoring. LIL currently leads the RED league with 71.5 ppg as a team. (G) Zak Clark's 14 pts is a season-high.
LIL (G) Ren Hsieh has reached double-figure scoring in 10 consecutive games. He has also recorded at least one assist in all 64 career RED league games.
AKN (F) Joel Capili's 19 pts and 10 rebs is his 1st double-double of the season and the 6th of his career. Capili's 9-pt 4th qtr is a career high for pts scored in one quarter.
AKN (C) Pat Pilar's 10 FTMs on 13 attempts marks both the most made and attempted FTs in one game in his career.
A battle of two different philosophies, Lillies carrying no player taller than 6-2 and none heavier than 200 lbs while the Ninjas, who were big last season, got even bigger with the additions of (C) Joe Yen and (C) Andrew Racle. AKN started it off hot as vet (G) Wilson Lew led the way by beating LIL in transition for 9 1st qtr pts en route to a 22-14 1st qtr lead. Only 8 pts from LIL (G) B.J. Grant kept the game from becoming an early blow-out.
The 2nd qtr became the opposite. With AKN a little too settled in, LIL moved the ball faster than the Ninjas made rotations. LIL (G) Zak Clark made three straight 3FGs to give LIL the lead. AKN would, however go to (C) Pat Pilar who powered his way into the paint. The Lillies, though, gave him few open looks, and instead put him on the line. Pilar wouldn't make his first FG until the 3rd qtr. With the score tied, LIL (F) Brian Shim made a 3FG at the buzzer to take a 39-36 lead into the half.
AKN went back to their advantage in the paint in the 3rd and found success but the Lillies kept running and outpaced Ninjas by 3 more pts in the quarter as Hsieh, shooting poorly, managed to find (F) Kevin Kentish, Shim and (F) Brian Sun for key FGs. LIL, holding an apparently solid lead in the 4th, didn't last. It was Capili time. AKN (F) Joel Capili simply took over the game, scoring at will and dropping 9 straight pts in the qtr. Lew also made a key 3FG from 25-ft to go ahead by one and was also fouled by Hsieh. Lew missed the FT and on the rebound, Hsieh would be fouled. With only seconds remaining, he made the first but missed the 2nd. Kentish grabbed the board but Hsieh's desperation attempt at the buzzer was swatted away by Pilar.
In OT, it came to FTs. Hsieh made 4 of his last 4 and the Ninjas made just 4-8 FTs. With LIL up 1-pt and 2.2 secs remaining in the OT, and Capili, who had carried AKN all game, faltered at the line, missing both FTs. A desperation tip in by Joe Yen fell off the mark and somehow, the Lillies prevailed, by the skin of their teeth. -- Kenny "The Jet" Li
