THU (G) Alex Shu elevates for a tough double clutch layup past ALL (F) Mike Dougherty.
Shu leads Thunder in a stunner by Jeff Van Ghandi
MLK HS, NYC -- I have to admit I never would have guessed this would be the outcome. It's not too hard to predict the Thunder would come out with plenty of energy--but the way they came out was beyond expectation. It's not a stretch either to think the older All-Stars might struggle Read more >>

2K10 SUM Playoff Preview - SEMIFINALS
FBNYC, 9.8.10
SEMIFINALS
(1) DB All-Stars vs. (2) Thunder | Wednesday (9/8) 8:00pm @ Chinatown YMCA
KEY PLAYERS
Young Yu 17.1 ppg 5.0 rpg 3.0 apg 1.7 spg 0.0 bpg
Alex Shu 16.2 ppg 5.0 rpg 3.3 apg 2.5 spg 0.2 bpg
SCOUTING REPORT: It's hard to say whether the All Stars knew they were putting together arguably the most talented team in the league but that's what they've done. Arguably. But, one thing is certain, they're fairly old which is a double-edged sword. They have plenty of experience but it will be interesting to see if they're legs are up to the job. (F) Young Yu has looked solid all season providing scoring, (G) Drew Chen has been a defensive dynamo while (F) Mike Dougherty plays clean up. Not to mention they have have plenty of firepower in (F) James Chu, (G) Dennis Yang and hustle in (F) Dave Choi and (C) Brian Shim.
The Thunder are the opposite, young and the restless, they are fast but they tend to play unwisely at times. Nevertheless, they had built a power house this season until (G) Leuis Ng went down with injury. But even with Ng still recovering, they'll be tough, dispatching a very talented Pretty Boys team. (G) Alex Shu has stepped up this season and could be a dark horse MVP. ALL's Young Yuseems to think so.

Thunder
Advantage
(G) Drew Chen
A
B+
(G) Leuis Ng
It's Chen that has been the glue for ALL. He is just willing to get it done on defense every play. Hindered by his arm injury, Ng still isn't 100%, but he'll be an impact regardless.
(G) Dennis Yang
B
A
(G) Alex Shu
Yang's shot hasn't been consistent but he's very capable of going off in this game. Shu has been lights out and never quits on a play. He'll be huge in this one.
(G) Young Yu
A
B+
(F) Mike Ha
After slight signs of decline, you can't argue with 17.1 ppg. Yu has been solid contributing in a number of ways. Ha has been quiet but still has a versatile touch to the game.
(F) Brian Shim
B
B+
(F) Brian Chin
Shim has been quiet this season but can still contributes solid minutes. Chin has been a pleasant surprise for THU this season and contributes on both sides of the ball.
(C) Mike Dougherty
A
B
(F) Ron. Dutta
The rookie Dougherty has been in a class of his own on the boards. His scoring has been spotty at times but he may be the best athlete around. Dutta is also a work horse and has been known to go off in big games.
BENCH (G) Jon Cho (F) Dave Choi (F) James Chu
A
B+
BENCH (G) Rob Go (F) Vincent Chang
The All Stars bench isn't deep but they have a lot of firepower in Cho and Chu (who could be starters) and a guy in Choi that will not be beat on the hustle scale. Go is a very solid playmaker off the bench and finishes games. Chang is no slouch as a hustle guy.

Yea, but this is where we go back to wins and losses. A lot of guys in this league can put up numbers for a 1-7 team. This season, it's a pretty close call, there are some solid candidates but nobody who really stands out.
Ren did his thing but the team finished 4-4. If they had won that season finale against the All Stars, hand it to him right now. But that didn't happen. Henry and Leuis were strong at the beginning of hte season but fell off late, Leuis because of injury. The Billionaires dropped 3 straight to finish. Sometimes the award just goes to the strongest finisher and that seems to be Alex Shu. You're technically not supposed to count playoffs but it's hard to ignore what Shu is doing right now.
oh dang

Record comes into play but it's true, the great players on both Thunder and All Stars kind of pull votes from each other. Butter definitely had a great year but so did "Dough Boy" Dougherty and you can't underestimate Andrew Chen on D. Alex did have Leuis and Mike Ha, even if the latter struggled with his own shot, to create open looks. Only Hsieh and Rivera seemed to have to carry their teams. And, to some extent Henry Jun as well.
I'm also pretty certain Butter could out drink all of those listed MVP candidates.

Yea, looks like Scoop thought they could win it but even he had it close. This was impossible to predict. The Thunder are on a rampage right now. Alex Shu is flat out killing it.
Re: MVP
Sep 9 2010 3:48 PM
In my opinion, MVP should be Ren, then Alex by a small margin.
Ren didn't have as good a supporting cast (though he did have two league leading rebounders) and was just very productive on offense.
Alex had a good supporting cast but put up great numbers. League leading scoring on 50% shooting from the field and 40% from 3s. That's just great efficiency. And he gets you 5 rebs per game.
However, I think I outdrink both of you combined, even if Thunder is at Hiro every Friday.
YY
butta
Sep 9 2010 3:20 PM
did have a good season but he also had the leagues best rebounder and defender on this team. He had more help than the others. Shu or Ng negate eachother out by being on the same team. I think it'll come down to JR Rivera, Ren Hsieh, Henry Jun. They were truly the most valuable players to their teams.

The Thunder came out firing on all cylinders. Definitely didn't think they could do that to the All Stars but they sent the tempo early and ALL just couldn't recover. Great game from the Thunder. Alex Shu might be MVP after all.
